“Be The One” Initiative Awarded Grant from New York State Office of Mental Health (NYSOMH)

The Racker Centers has awarded a grant from the New York State Office of Mental Health to implement their Be The One program. Be The One is informed by trauma-informed practice and operates on the principle that the foundation of a community’s mental and physical health are the safe, stable, and nurturing relationships built by its community members.

The grant is intended mainly to underwrite the costs of two Be The One summit meetings and outreach work in local schools and non-profit organizations over the September 2018 to June 2019 timeframe. These summits and outreach will:

  • Increase awareness of the importance of social relationships to undergird community social capital, and the ways that a network relationships can be nurtured between people of all ages, race, disabilities, cultures, creeds, faiths, and socio-economic status.
  • Engage in skill building, targeting mentorship skills, relationship-building skills, and listening skills that engage the Protective Factors Framework.
  • Train teachers, students, and staff of local schools to sustain stable and nurturing relationships in the educational context, mainly targeting TST BOCES schools but with additional city, rural, and alternative education schools.
  • Train local citizens through community centers offering outreach to underserved populations (e.g. Southside Community Center, Greater Ithaca Activities Center).

The kick-off meeting will be held on Monday, September 17th, from 2:30-4:30 PM at Cornell Cooperative Extension, Tompkins County. Please contact Jaydn McCune with any questions.
